Advantages & Disadvantages of each:
LATEX ADVANTAGES
Better fade resistance
More chalk-resistant
Breathes; less blistering
Retains flexibility longer
Tolerant on surfaces such as masonry
Will not yellow
Resists mildew better
Clean-up w/water
Good on galvanized metal
LATEX DISADVANTAGES
Shrinks more when drying, creating more surface stress
More temperature sensitive
Less adhesion to chalk/dirty surfaces
Can stain with water-soluble contaminants
Softer, normally not used in high traffic areas
OIL ADVANTAGES
Less shrinkage
Low temps have less affect
More durable in high traffic areas
Seals stains better
Holds rust better on steel
Better adhesion on chalk/dirty surfaces
OIL DISADVANTAGES
Turns brittle w/age
Slower dry than latex
Colors fade faster
Chalks faster than latex
Tight film blisters faster (won’t breathe)
Yellows w/age
Peels on galvanized metal
